Riddick Rules The US Box Office

Though Lee Daniels’ The Butler had held on strong for two weeks, it was actually toppled from the top spot last week when the final Labor Day US box office figures came in and One Direction: This Is Us scored the win. But the boy band have been well and truly battered by a newcomer at the top spot: Richard B. Riddick – or, more accurately, Vin Diesel. Riddick, the latest outing for the gravel-voiced vagabond, launched in first place with $18.6 million thanks to no fresh wide-release competition.

The Butler held firm in second with $8.9 million. Latino-aimed release Instructions Not Included continued to do well, leaping from fourth to third and earning $8.1 million. In fourth place, We’re The Millers took home $7.9 million, while DisneyToons’ Planes held steady in fifth with $4.3 million.

Despite surging to score the win last week, One Direction’s docu-pic cratered badly to sixth place, making $4.1 million. Elysium was down one place to seventh, making $3.1 million and Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine continued to dominate the indie releases, jumping to eighth and $2.6 million. At ninth, Percy Jackson: Sea Of Monsters earned $2.5 million, with The World’s End at 10th and $2.3 million. All told, Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost’s latest has earned $21.7 million in the US alone.
